A visit to the Grolier Bookstore

Some years ago, I was in Cambridge and I visited the Grolier Bookstore; I had not been there in a long time; anyhow, whilst there, I viewed that they had both of my small books (resembling pamphlets) of poetry and the wife of the shop owner offered to take a picture of me with the two books. She used my camera as this was an old-fashioned one that reflected the time stamp.

I am sharing this in a post; as I don’t get many opportunities to partake in things and not that I want to. I never knew if the books sold or disappeared from shelf life. No matter.

The Grolier Poetry Book Shop is the oldest continuously operated bookshop dedicated solely to the sale of poetry books. In remembrance of the shop owner who passed away in 2019:

In 2006, Ifeanyi A. Menkiti saved the Grolier Poetry Book Shop in Cambridge when he purchased it to prevent it from shuttering. In the spirit of Ifeanyi, his family will continue the mission of the Grolier.

Born in Onitsha, Nigeria, Ifeanyi first came to the United States to attend Pomona College from which he received his undergraduate degree. Later he went on to Columbia University and New York University for further studies. He received his Ph.D in Philosophy from Harvard University. He has taught Philosophy at Wellesley College for more than 41 years. He died in 2019 at the age of 78.

The bookshop honors his commitment to the vision of a global community through the creation of the Ifeanyi A. Menkiti Legacy Fund. Donations will go towards ensuring the sustainability of the Grolier Poetry Book Shop. Learn more here
